Allis-Chalmers

The Allis-Chalmers Corporations operated from 1847 to 1999. Known as Milwaukee’s key manufacturer it originated in James Seville and Charles Decker’s Reliance Works in 1847. They were originally a major supplier of milling equipment but declined to bankruptcy when the lumber and flour industries began to struggle. Edward P. Allis then purchased the company in 1861. It was then named the Edward P. Allis & Company Reliance Works.  In 1969 the company purchased its largest local competitor, Bay State Iron Manufacturing Company. This allowed for Allis & Co. to introduce new products such as portable mills, boilers, and gearing. Allis & Company had become the largest single manufacturer for steam engines in the United States at the turn of the Century. Allis-Chalmers became the largest builder of gas engines in the early 1900’s. They continued to grow and expand production and in the mid to late twentieth century they expanded into atomic energy and construction equipment. The company struggled to stay competitive due to the recession of the early 1980’s and diminishing sales. They declared bankruptcy in 1987 and closed its last Milwaukee office in 1999.

history

After formation in 1847 the first Allis steam engine was in operation by 1869. The Allis-Chalmers Company was created in 1901 after the merger of E.P. Allis and three other firms. In 1914 they introduced a tractor to their line of products and by 1926 they were able to establish a separate tractor division. Introduction of their Model U with pneumatic tires in 1929 made history for Allis-Chalmers. They made another ground breaking move in 1933 with the Model WC which was the first tractor with the square engine design. Allis-Chalmers was purchased in 1985 by Deutz-Fahr and by 1992 a new company was farmed called AGCO.
