Tractor Info

1963-1964

Featuring a single-stage torque converter there were very few of this tractor built. Also called the “Sugar Babe” this tractor gave farmers a four-wheel drive option.

In the early 1960s Allis-Chalmers built a few T-16 Sugar Babe tractors. Of four-wheel-drive design, they featured a single-stage torque converter driven from the engine through a direct-mounted laminated flex-plate drive. Engine was increased on a 3.0 to 1 ratio in the converter and then transmitted to the full-power-shift transmission. Forward and reverse direction in any speed range was transmitted from the transmission through the universal drive shaft, to both the front and rear differentials and axles.

Ostensibly intended for commercial and industrial applications, the T-16 tractor was also built in a farm version, with this T-16 pulling a 28-foot chisel plow. Standard equipment for this tractor included an Allis-Chalmers Model 7000 T16D diesel engine. Of turbocharged design, its four- cylinders of 4 7/16 x 5 9/16 inch bore and stroke yielded a displacement of 344 cubic inches. Options included a 4-speed transmission with a speed range up to 20.8 mph or a 6-speed transmission with increments to 16.5 mph. Production of the T-16 was rather limited, at least for farm duties.
