Model Information
1912-1920
Joliet Oil Tractor Company was building the Bates Steel Mule Model D in 1918, a year before Bates Machine & Tractor Company was formed. Weighing only 4,900 pounds, the Model D had a four-cylinder motor with a 4-inch bore and 6-inch stroke and featured an enclosed transmission and final drives. By 1920, Bates put in a larger Erd four-cylinder motor and pepped up the Model D to a 15-22 horsepower rating. Test No. 60 at Nebraska revealed a maximum drawbar pull of 2,996 pounds.
