Tractor Info

1916

Bates Tractor Company entered the tractor business with this 30-horsepower outfit in 1911. It used a two-cylinder opposed engine and had a total weight of 8,000 pounds. This was exceptionally light for a tractor of its size. Another innovative feature was the choice of two forward and reverse speeds — unusual in a day when many engineers considered one to be enough. The full hood and side panels were ahead of the times, and the enclosed cab appears to have been copied from the Avery Company’s undermounted steam engine.
