Ford

After producing a few automobiles Henry Ford strongly believed that American Farmers need a small, reliable, and cheap farm tractor. Around 1907 an experimental lightweight tractor was built. The company was based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1916. The “Fordson’ trademark was adopted as the Ford Motor Company was using the “Ford” name. The Fordson tractors were known for being lightweight and low cost. Ford had a verbal agreement with Harry Ferguson with Ford’s money and Fergusons’ patent they began todays 3-point hitch system. The agreement was terminated in 1946 even though Ford had agreed to furnish tractors to Ferguson until mid-1947. Henry Ford & Sons continued to produced reliable and tough tractors for many years to come. Their 9N, 8N, and Jubilee are some of their well known “classics” along with their 100 series tractors which featured the “Select-O-Speed” system. Henry Ford had presided over the production of more than 1.5 million tractors.

history

In 1916 Henry Ford and his son took their first tractor prototype to Europe. By 1917 a new corporation had formed called Henry Ford & Son. Around 1938 Harry Ferguson demonstrated his 3-point hitch system, Henry took a great interest in this and the two men entered a verbal agreement that Henry would produce the tractor and Harry would place his invention on the tractors. In 1919 Edsel, Henry Ford’s son, became president of the company. After Edsel’s death Henry again became president in 1943. Edsel’s son then became president in 1945. Ford organized an independent tractor company, Dearborn Motors corporation in 1946. In 1962 the gray and red colors were replaced with blue and white enamel. Ford & Son bought New Holland and Canadian Versatile Tractor company in 1987. New Holland Holding Company was formed in 1991 and help the assets of Fiat Agri, New Holland, and Henry Ford & Son.
