1914-1917

Existing repair books indicate that an air-starting system was added to the big Titan tractors, effective with the 30-60 models in 1913. Indications are that the Titan 45 also took on the 30-60 rating during the same year. The air starting system consisted of a combined engine and air compressor, coupled to a 200 PSI air reservior. Starting big tractors could be a problem, especially in cold weather. With this system the left hand cylinder was connected to an automatic air valve from the reservoir. Enough air coul dbe stored for several starting cycles, and in case of trouble, the air pressure could be returned to maximum by means of the compressor unit. This feature alone must have been welcomed by tractor operators. Production of the 30-60 Titan tractors with this old style cooling system ended in 1915. Total producetion totalled 1319 tractors. A new style 30-60 Titan tractor appeared in 1915. It featured a huge cellular, fan-cooled radiator. The air-starting equipment was replace with the friction drive starting engine as used on the 30-60 Mogul tractors. The operators’ cab remained, but the engine canopy disappeared entirely in this series. Production was centered at the Milwaukee Works, totaling only 176 units during the 1915-1917 porduction period.
