The 8-16 tractors were an instant favorite for fieldwork, especially for plowing. 8-16 tractors were available with optional rear extension rims. Adding a set of these rims improved trac­tion. Only a single forward speed was available on the 8-16. Reverse speed was engaged separately. Both were controlled from individual levers just inside of the left-hand drive wheel. The brake was controlled by a hand-wheel, barely visible behind the left-hand driver. The specially designed mainframe allowed the front wheels to “cut under” the frame, permitting short turns. 8-16 tractors had no fenders and placed the fuel tank near the rear axle. In addition, the 8-16 ignition system was via a low tension igniter and an IHC oscillating magneto.
