The Steel Mule 35 had a Waukesha six-cylinder L-head gasoline engine. This was the first model tested after the Foote Bros. of Chicago had taken over the manufacture of Bates tractors starting in 1929. It featured a completely enclosed drive train with all gears running in oil.
