Versatile Mfg. Co.

The Versatile 145 followed the D-100 and G-100 pilot series. An enclosed operator’s cab provided excellent visibility but still gave unprecedented comfort and convenience. A Cummins diesel engine was featured in the 145, four-wheel-drive tractors enabled one operator to handle larger implements, therefore cutting down on farm labor costs. Their new four-wheel-drive tractors appeared in 1966. These tractors were constructed of Versatile designed components, utilizing heavy-duty axles and transmissions. Two models, the D-100 and G-100 were built. The difference between the two rested in the engines. Both styles sold in sufficient numbers to firmly establish Versatile in the tractor industry. Versatile announced their Series 2 tractors in 1976. This series included all past models, the 700, 800, 850, and 900, with a new addition, the Model 75. The engines remained the same as before, with no change in horsepower ratings.

history

Peter Pakosh was employed at Massey-Harris as a tool designer. In 1945, Pakosh began building grain augers in the basement of his Toronto home. The first ten augers were easily sold, so Pakosh decided to build 50 units for 1946. Roy Robinson, a brother-in-law, helped build a field sprayer in 1946. In 1947 these two men formed the Hydraulic Engineering Company. Grain augers and “fan type” sprayers were the main products but the market was primarily in Western Canada. In early 1951, it was decided to move to Winnipeg. The first self-propelled swathers appeared in 1954. Versatile Manufacturing Ltd. was incorporated in 1963. Four-wheel drive tractors appeared in 1966. Beginning with the D-100 and D-145, Versatile went on to introduce the 700 and 900 series in 1971. The 800 and 850 models followed in 1973. In 1976 the Series 2 tractors appeared in several sizes. Five models were included in the 1978 line.
