Model Information
1925-1926
Using a Climax four-cylinder, BVI x 7-inch engine, the Russell 20-40 was, for all practical purposes, an overgrown version of the 15-30 model noted in Test No. 93. Again, an L-head design was used, but the 20-40 carried a rated speed of 900 rpm. Weighing 8,000 pounds, the 20-40 was a full ton heavier than its counterpart and came up with substantially greater power ratings during Test No. 94. On the two-hour rated brake horsepower test, 40.21 horsepower was developed, with kerosene consumption totaling 5.453 gallons per hour for an economy of 7.37 horsepower hours per gallon of fuel. Under maximum load, the 20-40 came out with a recorded 43.00 horsepower. A maximum drawbar load test run in high gear revealed 30.9 horsepower, with a pull of 3,590 pounds at 3.23 mph. Maximum pull was achieved in low gear, with the dynamometer recording 5,070 pounds of drawbar pull at 2.37 mph for 32.05 maximum horsepower. Few adjustments were necessary during the 32-hour test. Regular equipment included a Kingston Model L carburetor, Splitdorf Aero “448” magneto, and a Bennett dry centrifugal air cleaner. The 20-40 was equipped with a governor designed and built by Climax. It operated on an elliptical butterfly valve.
