Tractor Info

1936-1948

Oliver 70 tractors were introduced in 1935. This model was built in two basic types and four regular models. Included was the standard 70 Row-Crop, the Standard-Tread 70, a four-wheel high-clearance model, and the Orchard & Grove 70. A six-speed transmission was provided. For tractors on rubber tires, the maximum speed was 13 1/4 mph, but this gear was locked out on tractors equipped with steel wheels. A separate clutch was provided for the pulley and the PTO shaft. In effect, this was a ’live’ PTO system. This 1935 photograph shows George W. Bird standing by an Oliver 70 Standard. At the time Mr. Bird was the Shop Superintendent, and from 1944 to 1961 he was the plant manager of the Oliver plant at Charles City, Iowa.
