The 4-78 was an industrial tractor manufactured in Charles City, Iowa. It had two engine options, an Oliver 4.6L six-cylinder diesel engine or an Oliver 4.3L six-cylinder gasoline engine. It was a 4×4 MFWD 4WD with manual steering, optional power steering, disc brakes, and an open operator station with an optional cab. There were three transmission options, a six-speed, twelve-speed, and six-speed power shuttle. The 4-78 had several variants including the Oliver 1650 farm tractor, the 2-78 2WD industrial, the 2-78-15LL 2WD backhoe, the 4-78 4WD industrial, and the 4-78-15LL 4WD backhoe.
