Model Information
1917-1926
Conventional designs were evidenced in Russell’s 30-60 model in 1913. The front and rear wheels were identical to those used on the steam traction engines. A large horizontal tubular radiator was placed over the front axle. The cross-mounted four-cylinder engine simplified the drive train, requiring fewer gears and mechanisms than an in-line engine. The 30-60 was built in this style for only a short time, but no major changes were made during the entire production run.
The 40-80 Russell Giant was a classy looking rig. The intermediate gears and other mechanisms were enclosed in a “house” which even used hinged doors for access. The four cylinders had an 8 inch bore and 10 inch stroke. Operating speed was 525 RPM, and total weight was 24,000 pounds. From 1914 until 1921 it was rated as a 40-80, but it only showed 66 brake horsepower in the Nebraska Tests, and was re-rated to 30-60, being thus known until the end of production in 1927.
