J.I. Case

Jerome Increase Case was born on December 11, 1819 in Willamstown, New York. Case grew up with a large interest in the groundhog thresher, so much so that he bought one and became a dealer. Case would later buy six more threshers and horsepowers (horse treadmills) and head west to the town of Chicago, Illinois. The destination he had in mind was Rochester, Wisconsin. When arriving in Chicago it was harvest time, Case bought a wagon and a team, loaded up his threshers, and headed for Wisconsin. Along the way he was able to sell five of his six rigs. During the winter of 1842-1843, with the help of his carpenter roommate, he was able to build his own thresher along the lines of a groundhog, but with improvements. He soon moved his manufacturing operation down the river to a town called Racine.

history

In 1844 Jerome Increase Case opened his first factory and operated as J.I. Case Company until 1880 when he formed J.I. Case Plow Company. Following Case’s passing in 1891 the two companies did not share ownership but shared the same factory until 1928. Massey-Harris later purchased the Plow Works Company. The Threshing Machine Company then purchased the Case name from Massey-Harris which helped to end a long era of confusion for customers. The Case company joined with International Harvester in 1984 to form Case IH.
